Regular readers of this blog (who reads on a regular basis when I only post about once per year?) will no doubt remember I did a list of CompTIA's Tech Towns in 2019 and 2020.
Well, guess what? I forgot to do one in 2021, but it's 2022 and they have a new list.
If you do want to go down a trip down memory lane to 2020 you can find it here and if you really want to go back in time, check out the 2019 list here
So, I could compare the current list with 2021, but I don't have it, so I'm going to compare with 2020..
So, Here we go...
10. NEWCASTLE (**NEW ENTRY**)
Newcastle didn't feature in the top 10 in 2019, but here they are now.
Night Out Rating : I love a good night out "on the toon" - The people are really friendly and the drinks are cheap. MSP legend Richard Tubb currently resides in the area, despite being a Brummie.
New Interesting Fact : Newcastle was the first city in the world to have a combined road and rail bridge.
9. BELFAST (DOWN FROM 3 IN 2020)
Well, this is a drop, a fall from 3rd place in 2020
Night Out Rating : Sadly I've still never been, but it looks great.
New Interesting Fact : Belfast was known as the world's linen capital and was nicknamed Linenopolis
8. Leeds (down from 1 in 2020)
Well, bit of a nightmare from Leeds. Was number one when I last could be bothered to check, but number 8 in 2022.
Night Out Rating : Still a great night out though, and I still love a pint of Leeds Pale.
New Interesting Fact : The world’s first steam locomotive was made in Leeds
7. Edinburgh (down FROM 6 in 2020)
The call Edinburgh "Mr Consistency" - Sitting in at number 6 in 2020 and now 7 in 2022.
Night Out Rating : Not been for a while, but assume it's still great.
New Interesting Fact : The Edinburgh Fringe Festival is the oldest arts festival in the world.
6. London (UP from 7 in 2020)
Two of our nations capitals have changed places since 2020 with London hitting number 6.
Night Out Rating : Sometimes really hard to find a pub open in London after 11pm, and yes, I'm speaking from personal experience.
New Interesting Fact : The road from the Savoy Hotel to The Strand is the only road in Britain where cars drive on the right hand side of the road.
5. Nottingham (**NEW ENTRY**)
Well, this is why we are here. Finally, the greatest city in England with the greatest football team makes the top 10. (And I'm speaking about Nottingham Forest before someone mentions Notts County)
Night Out Rating : Amazing - Nottingham has the oldest pub in England, which also happens to not be the oldest pub in Nottingham. If you're ever in the area, let me know and we can have a drink.
New Interesting Fact : Ibuprofen was invented in Nottingham and so was HP Sauce.
4. Birmingham (DOWN from 2 in 2020)
Birmingham isn't only known as the home of Richard Tubb, Black Sabbath and Peaky Blinders - No, it's also known for being number 4 on this years Tech Towns list. Down from number 2 though in 2020.
Night Out Rating : It's OK - One of those places where you need to know where to go, and I don't.
New Interesting Fact : Birmingham claims to be where HP Sauce was first created, but they are wrong - It was Nottingham.
3. cambridge (**NEW ENTRY**)
Another new entry, this time it's the famous university time of Cambridge. Home of early 8-bit pioneers Sinclair and Acorn and of course the universally successful ARM.
Night Out Rating : I've been and can't really remember.
New Interesting Fact : Cambridge has over 100 libraries. Is that a lot? I'm not sure, it seems a lot though.
2. Manchester (up FROM 4 IN 2020)
They are edging towards the top spot slowly, a previous winner in 2019 I seem to recall, always going to be there, or there abouts.
Night Out Rating : Great fun.
New Interesting Fact : This ones a bit rude, so strap yourself in. An early name for Manchester was “Mamucium”, meaning “Breast shaped hills” was then given.
1. Bristol (up from 8 in 2020)
Bristol are up and down this list all the time, this year though they take the coveted top spot.
Night Out Rating : Great fun, some amazing bars on King Street.
New Interesting Fact : Home of Pax8 in the UK.
I hope you enjoyed the rundown of the Top Ten CompTUA UK Tech Towns this year. If you want to read more then head over to the report here
See you in 2023 if I remember - Who is going to be number one then?
